The purpose of this thread is just to introduce yourself to everyone (and get used to posting!). Don’t worry about doing it wrong, just try and if doesn’t work, try again. You can always delete your own posts.

Hi everyone. Just to introduce myself then. My first post! Pete Smith here; I worked for SC through most of the 1990s mainly based out of Mary Datchelor (or more specifically, the Kerfield). I started in IT working with Fundraising and Finance, but then moved on to the Finance Overseas Group. Since I left I’ve been running programmes for the likes of Hilton around the world, but spent nearly 10 years living in Dubai with my wife Sarah. If you know me and want to chat in ‘public’, just reply to this post. If for some reason you don’t want the rest of the Alumni to know (I can’t think why), PM me.

Hi there. Taking Pete’s lead, I am the Site Admin – the Stig of this forum, if you follow Top Gear! Please PM me with ALL your comments on the board, especially problems. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t start discussion threads about the board and ideas to improve it; the more the merrier. But if you have a specific issue, best to PM me directly to make sure I know about it and can help you. Screen shots are always good if something is going wrong; you can attach them to a PM. Cheers!

Hi everyone – as instructed this week over lunch by LL i’m Giving this a test run whilst sat at the airport heading back to Melbourne. I was employed by Scuk from 2005 to 2012 mostly in Humanitarian roles and in 2010 took a secondment into SC Australia who for some unknown reason continue to pay me. I still visit Scuk 2-3 times a year and stay in touch with plenty of former staff

Hi all. I worked in Farringdon for 8 years, initially in internal comms, then a brief stint as Head of Comms before joining Jasmine in the Chief Exec’s office. Looking forward to reconnecting with people.

Hi, I’m from a slightly earlier era! This is Sue Chandler. Worked in lots of different parts of the world from 1989 to 1997 – first in nutrition and then in programme management. In Tibet from 1991-1993 and lastly based in Camberwell as programme officer South Asia.

Hello all I am Gelay Umayam. I am from a much later era and before the great big transition into SCI. I was the regional HR manager for Asia and was based in Bangkok, moved to Singapore to join SCI, then moved to New Zealand. I am now here in Uzbekistan based in Tashkent for MSF. If anyone is in the ‘hood’ do let me know as would love to catch up with you even though we probably have not met before!

Hi, I started with SCF in October 1986 in Morocco and last worked for SC in 2008 in Lebanon. In between there were several stints at Vauxhall along with many in the Near and Middle East , Central Asia and SE Asia. Have people like Chris Saunders, Pram Unia and Harriet Dodd been invited to the forum?

            Hi Nick
The 3 people you named have been invited by Leonie and did receive the newsletter as well. The process was we found about 700 email addresses that the Steering Group had (mainly Leonie of course) and that was our base invitation list. However, people will need ‘prompting’ to join so by all means reach out to them, and anyone else you know. We will also shortly be advertising our existence on LinkedIn and FB, to reach as many alumni as possible.
The actual number of alumni of SC UK is according to LinkedIn 20,000 people! We’ve done some sums and think that number is overstated, but we are fairly sure there’s well over 10,000 alumni out there somewhere. I met a nurse who was with us in the 1960s in Vietnam only last week.
We realise not everyone will want to join, and the majority of members will become ‘sleepers’ who read the newsletter but rarely if ever come to the site. We are hoping though to get sufficiently large that this site has an active discussion forum, and that there are a few new posts on here everyday – that’s key to sustainability. The newsfeed on the Welcome page is we hope one attraction to bring people back; it really is quite interesting to review it over time and see how various topics hit the news feeds.
Any ideas to either make the site more interesting, or to reach out to more Alumni, gratefully received.
            Cheers
            Pete

            Hi,

I joined in May 1986 having been interviewed by the lovely Leonie Lonton and was based in Camberwell so I guess I was early era (yes pre- FOG Pete Smith!). I saw many changes over the decades, the 75th celebrations, the big MOVE to Farringdon and the transition to SCI! I worked in the Finance Department and in the finance team within Global (Overseas) Programmes but always based in HQ. I left in 2014 although I did return for a short stint in 2015.

Hi stranger! It’s great to think of pre or post FOG as a determinant of era. Do you know if that’s still running in the field? I know the Sun software is still being sold. I found out SC had swapped the system I put in HQ which was a little sad; again that’s still out there as a product today and could have been working fine all these years. I’m sure there were reasons, but I do remember putting a lot of thought into finding things that would last a long time. Great to hear from you.

I have just browsed the members list and saw the names of many former colleagues it made me feel quite nostalgic. To the far to many I have lost contact with Hi!, to those of you I never met Hi! as well.

I have noticed a lot of posts on social media regarding poppies and armistice day, at the same time as far too many polemic political statements from both the left and right, Save the Children was formed in the aftermath of the first world war, and we now we live in a time of strident politics and rampant nationalism. I do wonder if there is something Save can do to remind the world of its history.

Welcome Tim. Do use the PM facility to reach out to any of those old colleagues – no one else but you and them will see. As yet, people seem a little shy of posting here in public. I am sure that will change as the membership increases.

I couldn’t agree more with you about the history point. I know some events are being planned but it does feel low key at the moment.

From my perspective, the events leading to SC start on 12th November 1918. It’s one thing to argue for an economic blockade when two countries are at war, but however dubious that case is of targeting a civilian population, it crumbles once the war is over.

There are 188 days to campaign from 12th November 2018 to 19th May 2019. Maybe start a social media campaign on 8th February 2019 to count down the days from 100 ….

Hello everyone, I worked with Save the Children UK from 1993 to 2004, first in Vietnam, then regionally from Bangkok. After various assignments with UNICEF I’m now based in Tokyo. Nice to be part of this network and reconnecting with colleagues. Joachim Theis
