I have been asked by the centenary team at SC UK if I or anyone has any information about the work of Mary Hawkins, a somewhat legendary figure from SCF days, as I recall – but I never met her.

Apparently while working in Narh el Bared camp in Beirut, she had 13 year old Khalil, a refugee in the camp, as one of her assistants. He was illiterate and apparently not well behaved but Mary saw the potential in him. 2 years after she left the camp Khalil wrote to her and they kept in touch until the mid 1990s. He had become a nurse.

Does this story resonate with anyone, or does anyone have any other information about Mary that could be passed on?

      Many thanks,

      Mike

Mike. Sadly Mary passed away in 2002. Here is her obituary from the Guardian.

Thanks, Pete; that’s a really impressive obit – and I hope that one of the outcomes of our alumni site is that we will be able to pay tribute to our former colleagues in this way (for those who haven’t seen them, there are obituaries of Hugh Mackay, Andrew Hutchinson, and David Mepham elsewhere on this site).

Does anyone out there have any memories of Mary? According to the obituary she was engaged with the organisation into the 1990s, so perhaps someone had dealings with her and can add to our knowledge of her?

          Mike
