Dr. Sam Oboche Agbo, is a Public health expert and Child Specialist with strong background and work experience in Epidemiology; Primary Health Care, UHC, Health Policy and Financing and Business management in Africa and the UK. He is currently a Senior Health Specialist with the UNICEF ESARO Regional Office responsible for primary health care and universal health coverage initiatives besides risk programming in complex and fragile context within the humanitarian-development nexus. Prior to joining the regional office, he was the Chief, Health in UNICEF Somalia and at UNICEF Angola, the Chief, Child Survival and Development. During a career break from UNICEF, 2011-2014, he was the Head of Health and HIV for Save the Children, UK based in London where he managed a £304m programme in 30-foot print countries globally. Over the past three decades, he facilitated the development of new country programmes; designed and introduced replicable and scalable signature programmes in three typologies of countries; and aggressively mobilized funding through a public private sector investment partnership with GSK, Reckitt Benckiser, and Unilever. These initiatives are currently being implemented in DRC, Kenya, India, Pakistan and Nigeria. He was one of the 30 Gavi independent review members through 2017; and a Pro bono advisor to GSK on Maternal, newborn and Child health initiatives. He holds a basic medical degree from the University of Lagos; with advanced degrees in Public Health from the LSHTM, London University; MBA from Liverpool and a Fellow of Public Health, Nigeria. He started his public health career as a Medical Officer, Community health with WHO, Nigeria (1990); and progressively worked with UNICEF in Sudan; Tanzania; Palestine (OPT) and Angola. He has published articles on EPI, micronutrient deficiencies (IDD) and Op Eds on Polio, Angola YF outbreak response; budgeting for Children and a strong advocate for community engagement and partnerships. Sam is a Nigerian national and has four children; with three grand children aged 6 years, 4 years and 6 months respectively. He is a fluent English speaker with communicative exposure in Portuguese, Arabic, French and Hausa languages.
