Weather forecasts indicate a high likelihood of above‑average precipitation amounts across large parts of the country between October and December 2026, conditions that could be conducive to planting activities and support satisfactory crop establishment. Generally favourable weather conditions benefitted 2026 main season food crops Planting of the 2026 main food crops, accounting for about 90 percent of the annual production and consisting mostly of rice and maize plus small quantities of soybeans, potatoes, millet and sorghum, took place between April and July 2026. Harvesting is expected to commence shortly and continue until the end of October. Following slightly below‑average precipitation amounts in April 2026, rainfall between May and early‑August was average to above average and generally well distributed, creating favourable conditions for planting activities and crop development. Localized flooding occurred in some low‑lying areas in July 2026 following well above‑average precipitation amounts in some western parts of the country. Remote sensing data as of mid‑August 2026 indicated generally good vegetation conditions across most of the country, suggesting favourable yields and production prospects for the 2026 main food crops (ASI map). Harvesting of the 2025/26 minor winter and spring cereal crops was completed in June 2026 and weather conditions were generally conducive during the whole cropping season.
